Background & Inspiration

Petey Art grew from a deep reverence for heritage, memory and the stories we carry with us.

My journey as an artist began long before the first brushstroke.

Growing up, some of my most enduring experiences of storytelling came during visits to family in the rural areas of Zimbabwe. We would sit together by the fire and listen as stories unfolded. Rich with idiom, allegory, humour and lessons that were rarely explained outright. You were expected to listen, to imagine, and eventually to understand.

Song could break out as easily as conversation. Suddenly an instrument would be picked up and explored, voices would join in, rhythm would take over and that was simply the day.

Mundane and special at the same time.

Stone sculptures and carved elder figures lived in households alongside the objects of everyday life. Stories (of pasichigare) of long ago, of the olden days were told and retold, carrying memory, wisdom and imagination from one generation into another.

I didn't understand then that I was learning a visual and narrative language.

I was simply living it.

So when the stories eventually came for me, it felt only natural that I would express them in the languages through which I had first experienced them through image, colour, symbolism, rhythm and story.

Art became another way of telling.

The Work

Every Petey Art piece begins somewhere different: with a memory, a story passed down, a face, a landscape, a rhythm, a question, or a moment of quiet recognition.

My work explores memory, identity, belonging, ancestry, nature and the relationships through which we understand ourselves. Human figures, trees, roots, botanical forms, animals and music recur throughout the work, sometimes literally and sometimes symbolically.

I am interested in what we inherit, what we remember, what changes as we move through the world, and what remains.

Some pieces speak immediately. Others ask you to stay a little longer.

That is intentional.

The stories I grew up with did not always announce their meaning either. Sometimes the lesson lived inside an idiom. Sometimes inside an allegory. Sometimes it was hidden in humour, rhythm or a character you remembered long after the fire had gone out.

Perhaps that is why I believe art should leave something for the viewer to discover.

Every painting begins with a question.

The Prints

Petey Art fine-art reproductions are created with careful attention to the character of the original work, using high-quality printing processes and materials selected for their colour, detail and longevity.

The intention is not simply to reproduce an image, but to allow the work and the story within it to live in another space.

A work may begin with my story, but it does not have to end there. Once it leaves my hands, it enters a different home, encounters different memories and becomes part of another person's experience.

In that way, the tradition of carrying stories forward continues.

You become a keeper of the story.
